The idea of leaving the office at lunchtime to take in some fresh air, exercise and fill ourselves with healthy food can often feel like a distant dream to us city workers, where growing to-do lists and tight deadlines often lead to a convenience lunch in front of a laptop screen. This is exactly why the Clearsilver team joined workers from across Leeds city centre on Friday, ditching our desks at lunchtime in return for an hour of walking in the sun accompanied with various fun activities along the way.
The Healthy Heart Corporate Walk was the first of its kind held by Heart Research UK, encouraging people to get active at lunchtime and help their hearts, as well as raising money for Heart Research UK. The idea came after the Yorkshire-based charity warned that too many workers were sitting at their desks over their lunch hour, something we’re all guilty of at times!
Lunching on the job is now so common that the tongue-in-cheek term coined for it, ‘al desko,’ was added to OxfordDictionaries.com’s online edition last year, with city workers feeling so crammed for time that they choose to eat at their desks every day. However, Heart Research UK points out that “long periods of sitting are more dangerous than people realise and it’s our priority to get this message out there to as many people, as soon as possible,” which inspired the idea of a Healthy Heart Corporate Walk.
After collecting our free goody bags from Park Square, we set off on the walk to find healthy heart activities set up at various points along the route – and the Clearsilver team were keen to get involved!
First up was Team Manager Kate taking on Primal Gym’s running challenge.Next was PR and Social Account Manager Eve biking her way to becoming the fastest girl in Leeds with Nuffield Health. Then we learnt of Head of PR, Victoria and Creative Designer, Annabelle’s hidden diablo talents at City Square. Our Creative Director, Paul, represented us at target scoring at the activity hub on Briggate.Annabelle worked up a sweat with former world boxing champion Paul ‘Silky’ Jones as he taught her some of his skipping skills…… and then showed our Web Developer James a thing or two about boxing! And to end our walk, the team became the best group skipping business in town outside the Leeds Art Gallery!
We love supporting charities whenever we can, so when we heard about the Healthy Heart Corporate Walk we knew we had to be involved in supporting this brilliant idea. And after the busiest lunch break the team has had in a while, I think it’s safe to say we all returned to the office feeling healthy and happy and ready to tackle the rest of the afternoon!
